Evening Land Vineyards represents a gorgeous collaboration where reverence for place trumps ego. When sommelier Raj Parr and winemaker Sashi Moorman took over Oregon's legendary Seven Springs vineyard in 2014, they inherited one of the state's most storied sites, a 62-acre east-facing slope in the Eola-Amity Hills that had been quietly supplying fruit to Oregon's finest producers for decades.
Seven Springs is surrounded by Douglas fir with views eastward to Mt. Hood and Mt. Jefferson, and sits on ancient volcanic basalt soils. The duo approaches this beautiful land with Burgundian vibes, with parcellated winemaking, biodynamic farming, and "infusion" fermentation, which highlights no pumpovers or punchdowns—the result is extremely bright and fresh juice.
The 2024 Eola-Amity Hills Pinot Noir captures a really lovely restraint of old-world technique, with Oregon's distinctive terroir. It's calm, gorgeous Pinot channeling iron-rich volcanic soils and Pacific-cooled afternoons into something that feels both familiar and entirely of its own place.
Why We Like It
I mean, two amazing names in California doing a cool collab in one of my favorite terroirs? Plus Seven Springs is legendary, and Raj and Sashi aren't trying to make Burgundy knockoffs, hurrah! This estate Pinot is absolutely ripping and the accessibility to such quality in Willamette is also quite refreshing.
Field Notes
- Tastes like wild strawberries and roses, forest floor, and a lil' baking spice. Mineral driven finish and a luxe texture through and through.
- Serve this one slightly chilled. You gotta cellar right?! ;) ~60°F is ideal.
- Pair it with: While I'm of course a fan of chameleon wines that you can drink with anything or nothing at all, this one particularly I think would be nice to pair with a bit of time in the kitchen. Mushroom risotto is a Fall time fave around my house, or a simple roast chicken with root vegetables. Wow, so much Fall. I guess I'm ready? xx
